The season began with what looked like a big fight between Williams, who had a struggling car due to the removal of electronics, and Bennetton and Michael Schumacher. Williams new signing Ayrton Senna took pole in his home race, but Schumacher jumped him in the pitstops and took the lead. Senna pushed but spun, but kept the engine running and took home second place, with Schumacher winning. A huge collision between Brundle, Irvine and Verstappen saw the Jordan driver banned for three races and Verstappen out for the next two races with injury. The next race at Okayama saw Senna take his third consecutive pole position, but at the start there was drama as Schumacher got the better getaway and tried squeezing Senna, but his left rear tyre got clipped and he got sent into the gravel trap, ending his race. This paved the way for Damon Hill to take his first win of the season, whilst a brilliant recovery drive from Senna after a front wing change saw him take another podium. Imola saw a dominant performance from Senna to score his first win for Williams in a lights to flag victory, with his main rival Schumacher in second. Alesi scored another podium in the Ferrari, his consistency meaning he was in the hunt for the title despite his inferior machinery.

At Monaco, Schumacher took his first ever pole position, and went on to win the race. Damon Hill was involved in a collision on lap 1, and Senna could only manage third after losing out to the Ferrari of Berger at the start in what was a difficult weekend for the Williams team. Simtek scored their first ever points with David Brabham. In Spain, Canadian Scott Goodyear replaced an ill Mika Salo for Tyrell, whilst Schumacher would take another pole position, but lost out to Senna and Berger at the start and dropped to third. He gained second off Berger and would be handed back the lead of the race after Senna retired with engine issues. He looked set to win his third race of 1994, but a gearbox issue handed the win to his championship rival Damon Hill. Hakkinen got the first podium for Mclaren Peugeot after a tricky start to the year with the unreliable French engine. Schumacher would take his third pole position of the year in Canada with Hill alongside him on the second row, and Hill would beat Schumacher in the race after passing him during the pitstops. Senna lost more ground in the championship after losing a podium to Berger, who finished third. In France, Larrouse swapped Hideki Noda for Aguri Suzuki, and Hill got his first pole position of the year. However, an extremely fast start from Schumacher would raise suspicions that the Bennetton had lauch control. However, Schumacher was no match for the Williams in the race, as he got passed by Hill on lap 7 and lost out to Senna in the pitstops, giving Williams their first one-two of the season and Hill's third win in a row.

At the British Grand Prix, Hill got a home race pole position from Schumacher in second and Senna in third, but he got a really bad start and lost out to Schumacher, Senna and also Berger who was in fourth. Hill would start his comeback charge by passing Berger on the second lap, but Shcumacher and Senna were racing off into the distance. However, the most contreversial incident of the season would happen, when Senna tried overtaking Schumacher on the inside of Copse, sending Schumacher into the tyre wall and giving him an injury, meaning he would be out for the German Grand Prix. Senna tried to continue but had too much suspension damage. Senna would be given a race ban for his actions at the next round, meaning it was an open goal for Hill to win his fourth race in a row, snatching the championship lead off Schumacher. For the next race in Germany, Schumacher would be replaced by Vincenzo Sospiri and the banned Senna would be replaced by Coulthard. Berger qualified on pole position thanks to Ferraris more powerful V12, but in the race Hill beat him to win an incredible five races in a row. Salo got a suprise podium for Tyrell at a track he loved. A firey accident in the pitlane saw Verstappen retire in dramatic fashion, and as a medical precaution, he would sit out the next race in Hungary with as he recovered with burns. At Simtek, Brabham was replaced with Domenico Schiattarella. Schumacher qualified on pole position for the first time since Canada, and would get his third win of the season and his first since Monaco in a dominant performace. Senna seemed to be pushing him early on, but an engine issue would see the Brazilian fail to finish a race for the third time in a row.

Shock news happened when it was announced that Schumacher and Bennetton would be banned for three races in Belgium, Italy and Portugal for using lauch control. Their points would remain, but it put an enormous dent in Schumacher's title aspirations, and for Hill, it left an open goal, meaning the only person he would have to beat is Senna. Barrichello got a shock pole position in the wet at Spa, just edging Senna for pole. But in the race, the Williams was unmatchable, with Senna taking the win and Hill storming from 11th to 4th after a hard qualifying session for the championship leader. Barrichello would get Jordan's first podium of the year. Berger would take his second pole of the season and Alesi qualified 5th, but Ferrari imploded in the race, handing another win to Senna to close the championship advantage on Hill and Schumacher, aided by Hill's DNF. Sauber managed to get a double podium, the Mercedes engine project going very well this season. Senna would take his first pole since San Marino in Portugal, and would convert it into a win, with Hill finishing second despite orders from the team to wave him through for the win. However, Senna said that this was an unfair call, since he was contracted as the first driver, and since both Williams drivers were ahead of Schumacher he felt they should fight for the title.

Senna would take his second pole in a row at Jerez, and Schumacher on his return qualified alongside him, prepared to give it everything for the championship. Senna was also ready to give everything for the championship as well, but Schuamcher got the better start, infuriating Senna as he believed the Bennetton's still had lauch control, even though the FIA said otherwise. Senna would push very hard, and managed to pass his rival in the stops, but an engine failure ended his hopes for victory. Schumacher eneded up winning, but Hill finished second, getting a 50 point advantage over Senna and it meant he would win his first title on countback.

For Japan, Simtek would get Japanese rookie Taki Inoue in to replace Domenico Schiattarella. Senna took his third pole in a row in the dry, but in the wet, it would be Schumacher and Bennetton who would dominate, and Senna unusually struggling in the wet due to the hard to drive Williams. Champion Hill managed to finish second, whilst Alesi got his first finish since Silverstone and got a podium as well. Frentzen in 6th meant Sauber would be within 2 points of Mclaren for fourth in the constructors championship, whilst Schumacher was four points ahead of Senna in the battle for the runners up spot to Hill. In Australia, Senna got the advantage over Schumacher in qualifying and took pole position, but the German stormed ahead at the start and was building a comfortable lead, until he ran wide an struck a tyre barrier, meaning he would have to come into the pits for repairs and dropped to 4th, ending his hopes of a runners up spot in the championship. In the battle for 4th in the constructors, Sauber were looking really good with Wendlinger in 6th and Frentzen in 7th. With Hakkinen out and Brundle only 5th, this means Sauber would take fourth by two points. Hill would retire, meaning Wendlinger and Frentzen moved to 5th and 6th, but unfortunately, just 11 laps from the finish Frentzen would suffer a mechanical issue, handing 4th to Mclaren. Schumacher passed Berger with two laps remaining to take 2nd, but it was not enough as Senna won and took the runners up spot in the championship.

Hill won the championship, despite the fact that over the whole season, Senna and Schuamcher were generally quicker than him. Hill was only really the fastest driver clearly in Canada and France. He was technically the fastest driver in Germany, but Senna was banned and Schuamcher injured, meaning it would be a huge disspointment if he lost. The main reason Schumacher or Senna didn't win was because of their collisions and the Bennetton launch control drama. Schumacher and Senna lost easy 1st or 2nd placed finishes in Okayama and Britain because of their collisions, Senna lost what was going to be an easy win for him in Germany because of his ban and Schumacher lost good points scoring chances in Belgium, Italy and Portugal even if the Wiliams was the faster car there because of his ban. Some fans were frustrated at the FIA because they felt that they were being baised towards British drivers by effectively handing Hill the title through these bans for Senna and Schumacher. Senna was annoyed that he didn't win the title, and there were rumours that he would go to Ferrari for 1995, but the teammate dynamic with Hill was okay and he still remained faithful in the team despite them telling him to move over in Portugal, so he would stay. Schumacher would also stay at Bennetton, despite rumours of him joining the Suaber Mercedes project, as Bennetton would have Renault engines for 1995.
