After the thrilling Ford vs Ferrari fight in 2002, Jaguar were fully expecting to win the 2003 season. They did manage to win the constructors championship, but the drivers championship elluded them. It was Juan Pablo Montoya who was expected to lead the charge, and he managed to win one of the teams 3 rounds at Nurburgring. But the early season charge for Jag was headed by Mark Webber in only his 2nd season of Formula One. His first win in Austria followed by a win in Monaco would see him take the championship lead over Kimi Raikkonen. However, some reliabilty issues and some mediocre results meant he slipped back, but he was still in a mathematical chance at the final round in Suzuka but would need to win the race and hope his teammate faultered. He only finished 5th, but it was a strong first season for Webber in a Jaguar, demonstrating that he had the capabilities to win a World Championship, something which Irvine lacked. Montoya had a rough start to the season, only getting a solitary podium in the first 7 races, but as in 2002, his championship challenge came alive in the second half of the season, winning his only race of 2003 at Nurburgring and getting podiums in Hungary and Italy to lead the championship with two rounds to go. However, a collision with Barrichello at Indianapolis meant he went into the final round 4 points behind Raikkonen, meaning he had to hope Raikkonen and the other 3 title contenders woul faulter or win the race with Raikkonen off the podium. He was running in 2nd with Raikkonen 6th and was on course for the championship, but his engine expired in dramatic fashion, handing the title to Raikkonen for the first time, slipping to 4th in the championship behind his teammate and Michael Schumacher
