Jaguar finally took the fight to Ferrari in 2002, finishing with 6 wins, 15 podiums, their best finish in the championship with 2nd in both drivers and consrictors, and their first 1-2 finish. Just like last year, Juan Pablo Montoya was the lead driver. He took the fight to Schumacher right up until the death, but missed out by just 10 points. Montoya's start to the season was slow, with no wins in the first half of the season, with only 4 podium finishes and trailing Michael Schumacher by 26 points. 2 more wins for Schumacher followed, but Jaguar managed to overcome the might of the F2002 in the next 5 races, with Montoya winning all of them, giving him a slim shot of the championship in Suzuka. Montoya had to win the race with Schumacher 4th or lower, but Montoya's only hope was if Schumacher retired as he couldn't match the pace of the Ferrari driver, but that did not happen and he had to settle for 2nd. This was Eddie Irvine's last season in Formula One, and although he yet again couldn't match the pace of Montoya, he took his forst win for Jaguar in Malaysia. He again consistently scored points, taking podiums in San Marino and helping the team to their first 1-2 at Monza and also took the best result with his time at Jaguar, 4th place in the championship. For next season though, anything other than the drivers and constructors championship in 2003 would be considered a failure, as Mark Webber joined the team.
