Again the McLaren was more unreliable than the Ferrari, but less so, so again they receive a penalty in exchange for increased reliability. This time, it is only of 0.2 seconds per lap, however. In Germany, Irvine was boxed in behind Frentzen and Coulthard and so lost places after being held up in qualifying, costing him a position. If he had started in fourth rather than fifth, he would've been ahead of Salo even before team orders came into play.
